Eleven years youthful than Lovano, Douglas is a jazz composer with greater than 500 revealed titles to his name and a jazz educator along with being a performer. But leaving private politics aside, Sanford’s piece should succeed or fail by itself merits, not its political which means, and this it does brilliantly. Sanford develops his themes, short and atonal though they’re, in arresting and authentic ways. Much of the music is definitely performed quietly, and when the music does enhance in quantity it does so steadily, in controlled crescendos that are them adopted by dinimuendos.
