A residential home in Istanbul’s Fenerbahçe neighborhood merges contemporary aesthetics with tactile warmth, eschewing aggressive visual statements in favor of a subtle interplay between color, texture, and controlled lighting. MA House, designed by the studio escapefromsofa for a 2024 commission, emphasizes contrast over uniformity, crafting interiors that appear both inhabited and intentionally composed.
The design rejects a singular focal point, instead weaving together elements such as curved plaster walls and handcrafted terracotta tiles to soften transitions and introduce dimensional depth. Rich, muted tones provide a stable foundation, while deliberate pops of saturation, a yellow desk set against green paneling, inject dynamic contrast. Natural light is modulated through timber shutters, casting shifting patterns across oak flooring and altering the study’s ambiance throughout the day.
The living area establishes the project’s character through a sculptural wall that integrates plaster curves with terracotta tiles, serving as a structural anchor without dominating the space. Furnishings remain grounded, with marble-and-glass coffee tables paired alongside expansive seating arrangements. Intentional imperfections, a chessboard, fresh floral arrangements, or curated objects, disrupt the precision, ensuring the room retains an authentic, lived-in quality.
Across the residence, the approach treats interiors as a sequence of distinct yet interconnected spaces. Each material, terracotta, plaster, lacquered wood, fulfills a functional role beyond mere decoration. The cumulative effect is a home that achieves both timelessness and contemporary relevance, where refinement stems from thoughtful selection rather than sheer scale.
