A showcase of South African design has made its first international appearance at EDIT Napoli, the Italian design fair held in Naples from October 9–11. Founded by Gareth and Aimée Pearson, Cape Town Furniture Week has grown since its 2023 launch, and the fair provided a platform to highlight the region’s craftsmanship and material innovation. Organisers chose the event for its shared focus on emerging talent and cross-cultural exchange, noting both cities’ coastal settings and reliance on local environments for creative inspiration.
The five-piece collective display was curated by Italian designer Francesca Lanzavecchia, who selected works after visiting Cape Town Furniture Week earlier this year. She highlighted the diversity of approaches among South African designers, particularly their blend of contemporary craftsmanship with experimental materials. “What interested me was the diversity of their approaches, while maintaining a common thread of a contemporary mindset towards craftsmanship and material experimentation,” she said.
The selection included a range of pieces, from African Jacquard’s textile accessories to Ananta Design Studio’s glass-beaded vase, James Mudge Furniture Studio’s ‘Harrington’ dining chair, and Water Dixon’s layered brass and glass art piece. The showcase also featured Wiid Design’s ‘Tonga Round Side Table’, crafted from composite cork. Despite logistical adjustments for international transport, the collection aimed to reflect the originality and creative energy of South African design.
This year’s edition also introduced ‘Camera con Vista’, a new exhibition format where designers reimagined a room as a living space, with installations staged against the backdrop of Mount Vesuvius. The fair attracted 80 exhibitors globally and welcomed a delegation of 40 international professionals from countries including Mexico, Switzerland, Japan, and South Korea. Support from the Italian Trade Agency helped expand the event’s international reach, with organisers stressing the importance of knowledge-sharing for independent design practices.
The collaboration between EDIT Napoli and Cape Town Furniture Week reflects a broader trend in design fairs to bridge cultural divides. While the fair has concluded for 2024, the partnerships formed during the event suggest lasting opportunities for South African designers to engage with international markets and production methods. The next edition of Cape Town Furniture Week is scheduled for February 17–20, 2027.
