How to keep your gutters flowing

Gutter systems are essential components of any construction as they collect and drain water preventing damage to your home. Some people even use gutter to collect rainwater for domestic consumption. Although regular cleaning will keep your gutters working efficiently, you need regular repairs or even replacements to protect your house from water damage. So, what are the signs of a faulty gutter drainage system?

  • Splits and cracks: As you know, even the smallest of cracks can expand. If your gutter has cracks, the potential of water sipping into the fascia board is high. The shingles above and the foundation below may also be at risk.
  • Rusted surface and paint damage: painted gutters should be water-resistant. If you notice the paint is peeling off, this is an indication of stagnating water. Look for potential clogs and debris to free the water. The damaged paint patches can also be fixed through repainting.
  • Pools of water and mold: Mildew and stagnant water on the foundation is a sign of a clogged or faulty gutter system. If removing the clog isn’t a remedy, then try replacing the entire section.
  • Water damage: You can easily identify any damage by water if you observe your gutter on a dry, sunny day. Water damage is a sign of a leaking gutter that needs replacement.
  • Sagging gutters: When gutters are aged, they will sag. This is an indication that you need to replace them. Remember sagging gutters will hinder the smooth flow of water, damage your walls and foundation.

Sometimes, all you have to do to keep your gutter system working is to clean it. This process only requires a few cleaning tools and ample time. Cleaning gutters in the early spring can help them compensate for the intense rainfall of the spring and summer. Clear away leaves and other debris that collected over the summer months.

Never clean gutters after a rainstorm. Allowing a few days for the debris to dry out before sweeping the gutters would make the job even simpler. Start cleaning your gutters at the downspout and move your way to the closed end.

Here are a few tips to help you when cleaning your gutter:

  • The cleaning process may require a ladder. Make sure to practice ladder safety practices.
  • After removing large debris, flush your gutter with a strong stream of water from a spray nozzle.
  • Check out the downspouts to ensure the water is draining quickly. If you notice the water stagnating, it could be because the downspouts are blocked.
  • Check the gutter slope for regular water flow and drainage.
  • Invest in gutter covers to prevent debris from getting into the gutter system.

Like the fancy roofing parts we see today, gutter systems contribute significantly to your home’s aesthetic value as they help keep water damage at bay. As you invest in quality finishes for your home, remember to save some time and find the best gutter options in the market. Sometimes, look at the benefits rather than the price to get value for your money.
